Quite a Collection

These images were sent to me by David Garis in January, 2000, in hopes of showing his planes with a little better clarity than in some other images that are presented on this site. They were taken with a digital camera, which is a bit sensitive to the red light produced by red LEDs. Nevertheless, these images may provide a bit more detail than previous images.

Red Goldberg Eagle II with dieselized O.S. .20 2-stroke This is David's red night fly, a Goldberg Eagle II. David has logged over 100 hours of flight time on this aircraft, mostly at night! The engine is an O.S. .20 with a Davis Diesel conversion head. The average flight time for this aircraft with an 10-oz. tank used to be over an hour. However, with a recent (and extremely simple) modification to the engine, his flight times now average about 2 hours and 15 minutes on a cool winter day. Summer flights will be predictably longer, since the engine will run more efficiently in the heat.

Green Goldberg Eagle II with dieselized O.S. .26 4-stroke Here is David's green night fly Eagle II. This plane is powered by an O.S. .26 4-stroke engine that David, himself, converted to run on diesel. The engine is extremely efficient and provides approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes of flight time on an 8-oz. tank. Both this plane and the red night fly, above, are equipped with an electrical power generator, designed and built by David, to power the receiver and lights.
Bi-Color Great Planes Extra Special with O.S. .40 FP and alternator prototype This is one of David's newest creations - an aerobatic night flyer. It is a Great Planes Extra Special. The aircraft possesses a unique bi-color lighting system, with red on one side, and gold on the other. As I understand it, the colors can be switched from the transmitter. This plane is powered by an O.S. .40 FP (converted to diesel of course) and carries a prototype for a new on-board alternator (patent pending).
The Bird of Time after resurrection This is the Bird of Time - the sailplane that was converted for powered flight for an attempt to set a new distance record. It was powered by an O.S. .26 diesel 4-stroke engine that is now in the green Eagle II. The Bird was lost in an unfortunate mishap during the final stages of testing prior to the distance record attempt. However, it has since been rebuilt for some serious recreational (i.e. stress-free) flying.
The Chameleon nearing completion David's newest and wildest creation is the Flyin' King, a.k.a. The Chameleon. It is currently under construction, but nearing completion. Many new innovations are included in this aircraft, including a new and highly improved multi-phase alternator design (patent pending) to provide power to the on-board receiver, multi-color lighting system, video camera and video transmitter. A unique switching system allows the pilot to select several different mix-and-match lighting patterns among the available colors (red, orange, gold, blue, green & infra-red). The aircraft and alternator will be powered by an O.S. 60 FP with a Davis Diesel conversion head.
Below, is a couple of images of the Chameleon showing only two of the many, many possible color combinations.
